It's fun, but it's also delicious. Don't expect Grand Cru Classe levels of complexity, but then it's not supposed to be that! Beaujolais Nouveau is all about the party - young, fresh and fruity wine is just a great excuse to enjoy life!
Not released until the third Thursday of November, BeauNou is the first release of this year's harvest. Interestingly, there are only 55 appellations (out of over 360) within France that are allowed to release a wine in the year of its harvest - it is fair to say that Beaujolais is by far the best known of these.
A quick carbonic maceration and swift fermentation leads to bright, fruity wines with low tannin levels. This example from Chateau de Durette is no exception. Bright red fruit - strawberry compote and raspberry coulis, hints of bubblegum and an aromatic lift with crushed violet and lavender notes. It may be simple and fun, but this wine sure as hell ain't basic! Serve at cellar temperature (or even lightly chilled), alongside charcuterie and cheeses for that perfect Lyonnais style party!
